Findings from millennia-old traditional healing practices as well as modern medical methods contributed to its development:

Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® contains substances beneficial to the skin’s regeneration and fresh appearance in a special combination of peptides and amino acids and natural hyaluronic acid.

Organic direct juices, hyaluronic acid and collagen peptides

The basis of Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® consists of a blend of organic direct juices from high-quality fruits free of artificial sweeteners, flavorings and without added sugar. The types of fruit used are known for their high content of antioxidants and the substance resveratrol, which is important for cell protection and regeneration.

The flavor is characterized by the pomegranate, the fruit embodying the symbol for beauty, immortality and fertility in ancient Greek mythology. The pomegranate, or “apple of paradise” as it was called in Old High German, is a genuine all-round talent: Scientific studies on the pomegranate’s protective substances (polyphenols) proof its extraordinary cell protecting capabilities, so that the pomegranate, known since antiquity as a fruit with healing powers, is now making its mark in modern remedial medicine.

Beauty from the Inside Out – The New Beauty Drink Perfect Skin

My blog readers will know that I inform you about the latest trends in aesthetic and rejuvenating medicine, however, concentrate only on those products and treatments I personally feel are of use.

I would now like to tell you about a new development from my clinic, which we have been working on for a long time: Instead of applying skin care products onto the skin, we can now give our skin a treat straight away by simply drinking beauty! Our innovative beauty drink Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® makes it possible. It contains the substances that the skin needs to regenerate, namely, collagen peptides and natural hyaluronic acid, both of which are essential for the skin’s firm and healthy appearance.

Our skin’s capacity to regenerate its natural components, collagen and hyaluronic acid, decreases from the age of 25 onwards. The skin ages, it becomes drier and less firm. Aesthetic surgeons soon came up with the idea of injecting collagen and hyaluronic acid into the skin to more or less “fill it up”. As you know, I am very critical of practices involving the injection of these filler substances, because the results often look unnatural and nodules may form. For this reason, I thought about a more natural way of applying collagen peptides and hyaluronic acid to the skin – by nutrition! My many journeys to Asia helped me in this regard: In China, foods containing hyaluronic acid have already been recommended for centuries for those wanting more beautiful skin.

After several years of gaining experience optimizing the recipe for our Perfect Skin food supplement, the time had come for the Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® Beauty Drink:

After drinking 1 small bottle of Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® Beauty Drink per day over a period of approximately 2 to 4 weeks, the results were superior to those involving the external application of frequently expensive creams and lotions: The skin regenerates from the inside out and becomes firmer, more vital and smoother. Small wrinkles disappear and the skin’s appearance improves overall. Other parts of the body also profit from the special mixture of amino acids contained in the collagen peptides: Hair and nails become more attractive, the body’s production of the important fountain of youth hormone HGH is stimulated, having a rejuvenating effect overall, as you, dear blog reader, will already know.

The basis of Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® Beauty Drink is organic pomegranate juice, mixed with other organic direct juices from fruit in their natural state without the addition of sugar. The processed fruits are known for their very high antioxidant content, important for protecting cells from aggressive toxins, and the substance resveratrol, whose rejuvenating, regenerative effect on cells has been scientifically proven.

Since Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® Beauty Drink contains only natural fruit sweeteners and no sugar is added, our product is also suited for diabetics and persons wanting to lose weight. Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® Beauty Drink is free of any artificial sweeteners and flavorings and contains only natural substances.

Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® Beauty Drink is available in high-quality glass bottles without plasticizers, instead of the plastic bottles widely used.

A shot bottle contains 60 ml. The recommended daily dosage is 60 ml.

Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich® is produced in Austria using quality products and initially will be available only in our clinic, through our web shop on the Internet as well as in selected pharmacies, cosmetic salons and health food stores. Joan Collins and her younger husband

The bitchy Alexis Carrington from the American TV series Dynasty always had an eventful love life: Over the course of nine series, Alexis entered into numerous marriages and divorces with men she often used merely for her wily schemes. In real life, Joan Collins, who played Alexis Carrington, was also extremely active. The English actress, who is now 80 years old, differs from her on-screen role by having a preference for younger men.

She currently lives with husband number 5, Peruvian actor Percy Gibson who is 35 years younger than her. The Mail Online reports that Joan has no problem at all with spouses being considerably different in age: “I cannot understand why people are obsessed with age. After all, 90 is the new 70, 70 is the new 50 and 50 the new 40.” Nevertheless, it gave some journalists the excuse to gossip about married couples fairly different in age and to insinuate rashly that they have “financial” and calculating motives.

It’s a “traditional” attitude to assume that couples very different in age would be together for “financial” reasons rather than two people of the same age. Financial reasons also play a role in relations between peers – a 16 year-old boy from a rich family is “cooler” for girls of the same age as his poor classmate and when girls date him and have sex with him it often won’t be so much about “love” than social recognition from their girlfriends. All primates are driven by the “sex for social recognition” impulse.

We should be glad that after decades of struggle, the sexual liberation movement of the 1968 generation means that gays, lesbians, transgender people and others can now openly live out their sexual preferences, previously perceived by the majority as “abnormal”, as long as they do not hurt anyone else. We should resist any attempts from people with a different mind-set to force people into having new “standardized” sex lives: There is no “proper” age difference – people fall in love with partners who fulfill their emotional needs, whatever these may be. When choosing a partner, the age difference is just one factor amongst many. A bigger age difference has many advantages, because each person should bring something different into the relationship and “youth versus life experience” is also a “traditional” model, having been tried and trusted for millions of years.

Joan Collins still looks great at the age of 80 and optically she is a good match for her partner, who is 35 years younger than she is. As one of my blog readers, you know that plastic surgery and Botox do not determine whether a man or woman over 50 is found attractive by the opposite sex. The decisive factor is an adequately high level of the most important hormones. All those men and women over 50, who still have an attractive sexual aura, have good hormone levels. Sometimes these are real and sometimes assisted. Like many Hollywood stars, the Denver Clan schemer probably gets a little help from Hormonal Regeneration® (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, BHRT). Facial treatment with autologous stem cells from fat has helped many actresses to have more vital, younger faces. It is worth mentioning that many stars from the USA have their treatment carried out in Europe, where more experience has been made in this field.

In any case, we should be protecting the gains made by the 1968ers and vigorously resisting any new attempts to “standardize” our love lives, regardless of the guise they appear in, and whether they are against relationships between more mature women and younger men or mature men with younger women. In exemplary fashion, Joan Collins shows us that our love lives are a private matter between ourselves and our partners. And that’s the way it should stay!

Protection from the Sun: Tanning with Melanotropin and Regeneration from the Inside Out

After all the dreary, dark winter days, what could be nicer than to sit outside for hours in the summer sunshine! However, be careful: Although the warm sun has a positive effect on our mood, filling us with energy and zest for life, we still should not forget to protect our skin!

When tanning and sunbathing we have to protect our skin to prevent it suffering unsightly or even serious damage.

A summer tan from the inside out?

The hormone melanotropin ensures that our skin pigment cells produce the brown pigment melanin. The greater the quantity of melanin that is produced, the darker the skin color will be. However, the central role that melanin plays is in protecting the skin from ultra-violet light, the visible tan is more or less a side effect. People with a light complexion produce less melanotropin in their bodies and therefore get sunburned more easily.

UV light can be dangerous for all skin types: UV light ages the skin prematurely and increases the risk of skin cancer developing.

Despite all the known dangers presented by the sun, we still enjoy being outside in it and wearing light clothing. To protect the skin from the damaging effect of UV light, and to prepare it for exposure to the sun, melanotropin can be administered as a supplement.

Pigment cells produce more melanin, strengthening the body’s protection from UV light from the inside out, so to speak, so that the skin tans more quickly and maintains the tan longer.

A medical consultation and an explanation of procedures are needed for each therapy with melanotropin substances. Therapy sessions are customized to the patient’s individual needs.

Natural regeneration and care for damaged skin

There are new types of treatment available for irritated skin damaged by the sun, using stem cells from the body’s own fat, growth factors from skin cells and platelet-rich-plasma (PRP).

Treatment sessions are carried out on an outpatient basis and last for 1 to 3 hours. Unwanted signs of aging can be removed to a certain degree and enable the skin to regenerate and to regain vitality and freshness.

We are available to you to arrange an appointment for an initial medical consultation and can provide you with a customized individual therapy plan for your skin’s needs.

Perfect SkinIn order to care for the skin from the inside, we recommend regularly using Perfect Skin by DDr. Heinrich®.

Perfect Skin contains the substances the skin needs to regenerate and to maintain a fresh appearance, namely, a special blend of collagen peptides, amino acids and natural hyaluronic acid.

When taken regularly, connective tissue can be regenerated and strengthened and small wrinkles reduced. The skin becomes more radiant, smooth and fresh.

Order Perfect Skin now in our web shop from the convenience of your own home.

There will be nothing to stop you from enjoying the summer sun, knowing that you are well protected.

Russel Crowe’s Joint Problems: Stem Cells for Robin Hood?

The New Zealand-born actor Russel Crowe is known for his love of sports and for doing a lot of the stunts in his Hollywood films himself. It should come as no surprise to learn that many of his cinematic exploits are in adventure films, including the historical drama Gladiator, his big breakthrough.

During the filming of Mystery – Alaska: A matter of Honor, Russel injured his ankle and Achilles tendon for the first time and since then has been suffering recurrent pain. In the role of Robin Hood in the blockbuster of the same name, the legendary actor had to attempt a jump of almost four meters – and injured his ankle yet again.

Russel Crowe complained about his failed jump to the Daily Express: “It was a jump of four meters. Normally, you land on your toes to counterbalance the shock to the body, but due to the pain in my Achilles tendon, I tried to land between the ball of the foot and the heel. I was really in a lot of pain and was walking around like an eighty year-old,” the actor said. The director even considered changing the script and having Robin Hood appear with an injured leg…

When joints are overstrained through sports, accidents and as a consequence of overweight, joint damages occur repeatedly, which eventually lead to joint deterioration – the medical term for this is arthritis. This is often accompanied by chronic pain and over time the mobility can be restricted to the extent that an artificial joint seems to be the only way of restoring the joint’s function. However, an artificial joint can never replace a natural one.

After years of positive experiences with the therapeutic use of autologous stem cells in veterinary medicine involving thousands of dogs and racehorses, research is being conducted on stem cell application for the treatment of human joints. In September 2013, the preliminary results of a study were presented for 51 patients suffering from degenerative arthritis of the knee or hip. The goal of the study was to demonstrate alternatives to conservative therapies and the use of artificial joint replacement for joint problems caused by arthritis.

During the study, the patients affected joints were injected with autologous stem cells. After three months, the participants in the study stated that their pain had lessened and the joint function of hip and knee had improved. In addition, all joints treated with stem cell therapy remained free of infection. Similarly positive reports on the therapy of arthritis using autologous stem cells were also presented in a recent German-French study.

Due to its high level of potential, the therapy of joint degeneration using stem cells from fat seems to be a promising development for improving the quality of life of those persons suffering. Mesenchymal stem cells, the progenitor cells of connective tissue, have a strong regenerative effect and inhibit inflammatory stimuli. Luckily, every person has enough of these vital cells, which are present in much higher concentrations in fat tissue than in bone marrow. Therefore, stem cells from autologous fat do not have to be artificially reproduced in a laboratory, as it is usually necessary for stem cells from skin and bone marrow.

Joint treatment with stem cells is carried out on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia. First of all, a small amount of fat is extracted using liposuction with microcannulas, from which stem cells are obtained in a complex procedure. The stem cells are injected into the affected joint immediately thereafter where their regenerative effect begins to work. The patient is fully mobile after treatment; the therapeutic effect should begin within just a few weeks. Any further treatment needed can be carried out several months later at the earliest, regardless of the improvement achieved.

Could the brave defender of the poor, Robin Hood have taken riches from the nobility and given to the poor with an injured ankle? It is certain that there were no suitable methods for treating deteriorated joints in the Middle Ages. In contrast, thanks to our knowledge these days about stem cells from autologous fat, we have the advantage of being able to use totally different, innovative therapies – even if we cannot simply change the script like Russel Crowe.

Palaeolithic diet: Ötzi the Iceman did not have any weight problems…

In the mid-1990s, a mountaineer came across the remains of a man on the Similaun glacier, thus causing a great sensation. The Iceman was approximately 5,250 years old and originated from the Neolithic period. The body was exceptionally well preserved under the ice. Even the stomach contents of the man known as “Ötzi” survived the millennia and provided scientists with interesting insight into the eating habits of our ancestors.

Ötzi probably travelled far and survived on fruits and wild animals he had killed himself – a bow and arrow were among his belongings. His last meal consisted of deer and ibex meat, vegetables and some grains. Always on the go, Ötzi nourished himself like those of the Palaeolithic Age. His increasingly sedentary contemporaries went about farming and clearly ate more carbohydrates in the form of grain.

But, did hunters and gatherers really lead healthier lives? In the Palaeolithic Age, there was a great deal of fruit and meat on the menu; potatoes and rice had not yet been cultivated, and cereals and grains were largely unknown.

A Swedish study aimed to find this out. For five weeks, ten overweight women nourished themselves from lean meat, fruits, vegetables, eggs and nuts, as cave dwellers had. If they still felt hungry after eating their rations, they were allowed to supplement their diet with “Palaeolithic meals”, as long as the content of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and unsaturated fats remained in a constant “Palaeolithic” ratio.

The scientists were amazed by the results: Although fat intake had almost doubled since starting the diet, the women lost nearly 5 kg. Furthermore, heart rate and blood pressure decreased and the Palaeolithic diet positively affected the liver function. Protein-rich foods obviously increase satiety and heat production of the body, which stimulates metabolism.

These results were confirmed in a follow-up study in 45 obese individuals with type 2 diabetes. These individuals were also subjected to a Palaeolithic diet for months. In addition to weight loss, they also experienced improved metabolic regulation without additional strain on the kidneys. The high protein-to-carbohydrate ratio positively affected the heart and circulation, thereby stimulating weight loss.

The caloric intake thus plays a smaller role than many assume. Unsaturated fatty acids, which are found in higher proportions in the Palaeolithic diet, positively affect hepatic function and insulin sensitivity. In this way, the catabolism of fat in the liver increases considerably, thus facilitating weight loss.

A carbohydrate-rich diet, which has been typical since the Neolithic period, often leads to hormone imbalance and – as a result of current overconsumption – obesity. Obesity, in turn, stabilizes hormonal imbalance, thus resulting in a vicious cycle.

As a regular reader of my blog, you are well aware that I am highly in favor of the Palaeolithic diet! Such a diet is “species appropriate”, not only because of the weight, but also because our systems work better and does not age as fast as with a carbohydrate-rich diet.

However, an ideal weight unfortunately cannot always be achieved simply by switching to a “Palaeolithic” diet with a lot of fish, fat, fruit and vegetables, but few grains and other carbohydrates. In the case of obesity, there is often an unbalance of T3 and T4 hormones and estrogen (caused by, for example, thyroid inflammation), which can be balanced with bioidentical hormones. Bioidentical hormones are similar in structure to our human hormones.

At the beginning of a medically supervised weight loss program, hormone levels and general health are analyzed. Based on this, a customized plan will be created according to individual needs. As soon as the hormonal balance is restored, weight loss through dietary changes and exercise become substantially easier. A weight loss program typically lasts for three to six cycles (1 cycle = 28 days).

Troublesome problem areas that are resistant to diet and training can be sculpted before the weight loss through tissue-conserving microcannular liposuction with local anesthesia. By reducing estrogen-producing fat deposits, the body will be prepared for “fat reduction”.

In addition, dietary supplements can stimulate bodily processes that promote weight loss. In this way, Weight Loss Phaseolin, which is produced from white kidney beans, hinders the uptake of carbohydrates from the intestine. The beneficial effect of the beans has already been known by the Indians for thousands of years.

People from the Palaeolithic Age and primitive cultures had a staggering amount of knowledge about nutrition and health. We have learned a great deal from Ötzi and can provide scientific evidence for the comprehensive knowledge of our ancestors. It is now up to us to rediscover this wealth of ingenious knowledge and to use it for human well-being.

Breast augmentation with stem cells after the removal of silicone implants

I am regularly consulted by patients who are dissatisfied with their silicone breast implants since they are either due for an “implant change” or are suffering from discomfort. They may find the feeling of having a foreign body implanted in them unpleasant or suffer from complications such as capsular fibrosis.

Instead, these patients prefer to have breast augmentation performed by using a filler that is made of their body’s own tissue.

Breast augmentation with stem cell-enriched autologous fat after the removal of breast implants offers a natural alternative to silicone implants.

In most cases, breast augmentation with stem cell-enriched autologous fat is carried out several months after the removal of the implants once the healing process associated with it is completed. Since the breast is usually pre-stretched by the silicone implants, it has enough space for the autologous fat after the implants have been removed. An augmentation of one half to two cup sizes can be achieved with one round of surgery.

Patient before and after stem cell breast augmentation after the removal of silicone implants

The after photo shows the result actually achieved by the treatment. To protect the anonymity of the depicted person individual physical characteristics (e.g., moles, tattoos) might have been removed.

Before the breast is augmented with stem cells, autologous fat is gently extracted by means of thin microcannulas. The autologous fat harvested in this way is gently injected into the breast with fine injection needles, either untreated or, according to the patient’s wishes, after being enriched with stem cells in a laboratory process. Surgery is carried out on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia or, if the patient prefers, in twilight sleep.

The breast volume gained with autologous fat and stem cells consists entirely of the body’s own living tissue. As a result, the augmented breasts feel “real” and look completely natural in any position. If breast augmentation is carried out with stem cell-enriched autologous fat, further surgery is generally unnecessary and the results achieved can usually be sustained in the long term.

My team and I would be pleased to give you detailed advice on an individual basis. If you are interested, please contact us via e-mail or by telephone at +43 1 532 18 01 to arrange a consultation appointment.

Kim Kardashian: A slim waist with the courtesy of Photoshop?

Six months after the birth of daughter North West, Kim Kardashian, curvaceous as ever, graced the title page of the tabloid newspaper US Weekly. The thirty-three year-old Kim has had to take some strong criticism from the press after she put on a lot of weight during her pregnancy, so straight after giving birth she announced that she was going on a strict diet to regain her old weight.

In the meantime, the pretty brunette has already lost more than twenty kilos in weight with the aid of the controversial Atkins diet and a tough fitness boot camp. Of course, star rapper husband Kanye West gave her a great deal of support in her endeavors. Only a short while ago, Kim published one of her famous “butt” selfies of herself and her friend Blac Chyna on Instagram showing both ladies in sports clothes with bare midriffs, posing in front of a mirror.

Kim’s slim waist and the magnificent rears of the two stars can’t fail to attract attention. However, just a few hours after the photo was published, it became clear that it had been manipulated with Photoshop. Apparently, this is how the American beauty added the finishing touches to her waist, although she really doesn’t need it and is an attractive woman without having to cheat and who really can be proud of her curves.

In order that Kim could regularly control her weight loss with the Atkins diet, she got hold of seven sets of scales and weighed herself an incredible fourteen times a day. The Atkins diet follows the motto “less pasta, more steaks”, in other words, huge amounts of protein and fat – however, carbohydrates are a no-no.

A diet based as much as possible on “Early Stone Age” nutrition, including large quantities of meat, fat, fruit and vegetables, but only small amounts of cereals and other carbohydrates, is certainly healthier than the so-called “balanced” diet usually consumed in the West. Therefore, the Atkins diet, which is similar to Paleolithic types of eating, is more suited for weight loss than “mixed nutrition”.

As a girl who is constantly in the spotlight, Kim will have to find out for herself if the Atkins diet works for her. After all, as an “it girl” she has a demanding schedule and is a new mother into the bargain. Frequently, the cause of “baby fat” is solely due to nutrition, but sometimes the reason can be found elsewhere. In this way, Kim could deal with the hormonal and health-related causes of her weight problems.

Whereas most women’s hormone levels settle down fairly soon after giving birth, in some cases annoying fat pads quickly reappear even if energy-sapping attempts have been made to lose weight. The cause of this can be a hypofunction of the thyroid gland and the resulting lack of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin (T4). As the thyroid hormone is vital for the body’s energy metabolism, less calories are burned if it is present in insufficient quantities.

As Kim Kardashian recently became a mother herself, it would be a good idea for her to have her hormone levels examined by an experienced physician and, if necessary, have the hormonal balance restored with bioidentical hormones. Thereby, the hormones administered and their dosage is tailored to the patient’s personal needs and goals. In addition to weight loss, Hormonal Regeneration® (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, BHRT) can help to boost physical performance and give the skin a more vital and firmer appearance.

When dealing with troublesome problem zones on the abdomen and hips, it can sometimes be useful to have gentle liposuction carried out before other weight loss measures are taken. Estrogen-producing fat cells are removed in this way, and the body can adjust better to weight loss. The risk of hanging skin pockets forming after drastic weight loss also can be lessened by liposuction with microcannulas being carried out beforehand, and tissue regression stimulated.

Special nutritional supplements, such as Weight Loss Phaseolin, can help with weight loss therapy or a patient’s own efforts to lose weight. Naturally, a sensible diet and regular training also have to be a part of it.

Weight loss is to be recommended for health reasons, and should be for the long term. Kim Kardashian wouldn’t have to spend time retouching photos and could then present her butt to the public in new splendor, without the aid of Photoshop.

The Cara Delevingne Effect: Thick Eyebrows with Growth Factors, Prostaglandins and PRP

New fashion and styling trends develop at a fast pace in our modern world. In contrast, shape and thickness of eyebrows tend not to change that often.

For many decades it was considered particularly feminine for women to pluck their eyebrows and to keep them as thin as possible. Top model Cara Delevingne is now setting new standards with her bushy brows.

When these fine hairs have been plucked out repeatedly over a number of years, eyebrow growth generally becomes thinner. Good make-up very rarely recreates the same effect naturally luxuriant brows have.

Treatment with growth factors from hair follicle cells (hair follicle growth factors, HFGF), prostaglandins, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from the body’s own blood and autologous stem cells from fat have the potential to stimulate increased hair growth, making eyebrow and scalp hair denser.

Hair treatment with growth factors and prostaglandins

Tissue hormones (growth factors and prostaglandins) are essential for the body’s own continual regeneration of hair and skin. Hair growth therapy involves introducing hair follicle growth factors into the eyebrow area or the head using fine micro needles, where they support hair growth. Prostaglandins are applied directly onto the skin and are absorbed there by the hair follicles.

Patients can carry out their own treatment at home with a derma roller, using instructions given.

Hair treatment with platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Hair growth treatment with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) involves harvesting valuable blood platelets from a small amount of blood. This concentrate of thrombocytes, known as “platelet-rich plasma”, is gently injected into the affected areas, where it produces regenerating growth factors and activates the body’s own stem cells.

PRP treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis and, if needed, can be repeated after several months.

Hair treatment with stem cells from the body’s own fat

The stem cells in fat tissue have considerable biological potential for use in hair growth therapy. The stem cells required are obtained from a small amount of fat, gently extracted with microcannulas. Subsequently, the stem cells are directly injected into the scalp and eyebrows. In this way, existing hair is strengthened and the growth of new hairs stimulated at the hairlines.

Depending upon the individual initial condition, the best results can be achieved with a combination of hair follicle growth factors, prostaglandins, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells from autologous fat.

How the Imhotep “Mummy” became the God of Medicine…

After climate change had turned the Sahara into a desert approximately 7,000 years ago, humans withdrew to the Nile valley, which had remained fertile. It was here that Egyptian high culture developed, at first existing as two kingdoms – Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. King “Scorpion” was one of the kings reigning during this era, known from the film The Mummy and portrayed by the American wrestler “The Rock”. Shortly after Scorpion’s reign, King Narmer was able to unite Egypt around 3000 BC. The First Dynasty of the Old Kingdom had begun.

King Djoser (Neker-I-yet) reigned during the Third Dynasty. He was given support in affairs of state from his vizier, Imhotep. He is also known from various mummy films, in which Imhotep was played by the classical horror film actor Boris Karloff in 1932 and by the South African actor Arnold Vosloo in a 1999 remake. In these films, he had fallen in love with the Pharaoh’s daughter and tried to fetch her back from the underworld after her death using a magic formula from the goddess Isis. He was sentenced to a nameless death for this double sacrilege and mummified when still alive.

Of course, all of that is nonsense. Imhotep was in his Pharaoh’s favor until his death. He was a brilliant politician and great architect: He constructed the first step pyramid in history, in which his Pharaoh Djoser was later laid to rest. Above all, he was a gifted physician: He did not know the magic formula Isis used to waken Osiris from the dead, but he created medical compendia, including an overview of all healing plants and medicines. His knowledge of anatomy allowed him to develop a new method of mummification during which all decaying parts of the body were removed and replaced with artificial ones. This method was probably used on all royal mummies of the Old Dynasty and was widespread for many centuries, until the time of the Middle Kingdom. The body was first skeletonized and then modelled with linen bandages using plaster and resin. The result was lifelike, painted mummy sculptures resembling shop window dolls. Unfortunately, only a very few such mummies have remained preserved. The few royal mummies found from the Old Kingdom, such as those of Queen Shesheshet and Prince Teti-Ankhem, both from the 6th Dynasty, were damaged in ancient times by grave robbers and are very badly preserved.

It was around 800 years later that mummification methods were improved, making it possible to preserve the whole body. This method was used to mummify the famous Pharaohs of the New Kingdom, Ramses II., Tut Ench Amun, Hatschepsut. Their bodies have been extremely well conserved and can be viewed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. However, the inner organs were removed, as before, and stored in “canopic jars”.

Imhotep was probably buried in Sakkara, near to his Pharaoh. In Greek antiquity, Egypt was the mecca of medicine and Imhotep was raised to the status of God of Medicine with the name “Asklepios” (Aesculapius). Huge numbers of pilgrims journeyed to Sakkara, where sacrifices were made to Imhotep. To a great extent, the wisdom of Galen and Hippocrates can be traced back to Imhotep’s research, and thus an extensive part of the medicine practiced in Arab countries and later in Europe.

Following in Imhotep’s footsteps, many brilliant doctors have made advances in medical science. A great deal has also taken place during recent years: The development of therapies using autologous stem cells, for example, is due to the efforts of individual doctors. Operations on an outpatient basis using tumescent anesthesia, now an integral part of surgical practice, were developed by individual aesthetic surgeons. Hormonal regeneration with bioidentical hormones was also developed by individual physicians.

Here it can be seen how important it is that brilliant physicians are allowed to continue their research and that medical therapy freedom is not restricted by bureaucrats. What would have become of medicine if Pharaoh Djoser’s officials had directed Imhotep on how to treat his patients?

Yet this is exactly what medical science is threatened with now in the EU: Following pressure from lobbyists, politicians at EU level are trying to place restrictions on the freedoms physicians have when offering medical therapy. The plan is that all doctors would have to offer treatment according to predetermined diagnosis/therapy lists. The financial interests of pharmaceutical companies are behind this development, seeking to ensure that only those therapies that have been “confirmed” by them in studies costing millions may be used – so-called “evidence-based medicine”. Financing for these expensive studies is, of course, geared towards patentable medicines, with which nice profits can be made.

In future it would not be possible, or hardly possible, to use types of therapy other than those approved by the state. Given the rapid pace of progress in medicine, patients in our country would be denied new types of therapy possibly already on offer in other countries.

Additionally, certain politicians would like to centralize and nationalize medicine. They would prefer to banish physicians to state-run polyclinics where they would only be permitted to apply state-certified therapies and would have to enter all patient data in a state-operated electronic computer system (“ELGA” (Electronic Health Records) already exists), whereby all sensitive patient data would be accessible to state civil servants. Do you want your health records to be accessible to people you do not know? Since the Edward Snowden affair we all know what the state of absolute data security means. You can bet that the whole thing will be sold to us as “protecting patient security” ;-).

Generations of archaeologists have attempted to find Imhotep’s grave, but to date have not been successful. His ingenuity can also be seen here: In contrast to his Pharaoh Djoser, whose pyramid had already been stolen from in ancient times, Imhotep had taken the precaution of hiding his tomb, and its exact location was already forgotten in antiquity.

We should all hope that good physicians in the EU continue to have the possibility to advance medical knowledge and use their responsibility in the best way to select optimal treatment for their patients; even if these doctors are not quite as brilliant as Imhotep.
