Oxytocin Reduces Consequences of Alcohol

The so-called “cuddle hormone” oxytocin apparently reduces the negative impact of alcohol on motor skills due to the neutralization of the alcohol-induced increased effect of the messenger substance GABA (which influences motor skills). Oxytocin inhibits the influence of alcohol on certain GABA receptors.

Studies in alcoholics have further shown that oxytocin is able to reduce alcohol consumption and to alleviate consequences of abstaining. This could mean new therapeutic options with bioidentical hormones for alcoholics. We will keep you up to date.
