Frequently Asked Questions about Liposuction
Do I need to take sick leave or vacation time?
Please note that elective cosmetic treatments do not entitle you to sick leave. Depending on the type and size of the liposuctioned regions and individual sensitivity to pain, it may be more pleasant to take 1 or 2 days off after the procedure. From a medical standpoint it is usually not necessary to take vacation time.
Can liposuction be used to lose weight?
No! Liposuction is used for body contouring and for reducing problem areas. Nevertheless liposuction can be very useful as initial weight loss therapy, because the body is apparently programmed for “fat breakdown” after liposuction. Consequently it is often much easier to shed kilos quickly and permanently by dieting, fitness training, and (medically-assisted) weight loss therapies after liposuction. Liposuction for weight loss should be integrated in an overall weight reduction program. Liposuction without subsequent weight loss therapy is generally not sufficient to lose weight.
Should I lose as much weight as possible before undergoing liposuction?
No! Doing so would make the liposuction considerably more difficult! Please wait until after the liposuction before trying to lose weight (experience has shown that it is also much easier then). Furthermore, liposuction prior to a weight loss therapy generally favors the shrinking of “excess” tissue, thus reducing the risk of sagging skin folds forming.
When can I play sports again?
Light physical activity is possible after 1 or 2 days. Depending on the type and number of the liposuctioned regions, you can engage in intensive athletic activity ca. 1 to 4 weeks after the procedure.
What must I do after the procedure?
The compression bandage that you receive from us must be worn overnight. You can remove it yourself the next day. For microcannular liposuction, you must then wear compressive garments for ca. 7 days, depending on the nature of the liposuctioned regions. For liposuction with regular cannulas, the compressive garments must be worn for ca. 4 to 8 weeks. As a general rule there will be redness, bruises, and swelling. We recommend that you avoid saunas, steam baths, swimming, “sweat-generating” activities, and solariums until the puncture sites have healed.
How much less will I weigh after a liposuction?
The amount of fat liposuctioned cannot be converted into kilos. The main purpose of liposuction is the perfectioning of the silhouette and the reduction of problem areas. Depending on the nature and size of the liposuctioned regions, a reduction of up to two clothes sizes can be achieved.
Can you undergo liposuction at an advanced age?
Generally liposuction can be performed at any age. Depending upon age and state of health, it may be necessary to obtain surgery release.
Does the fat return?
In liposculpture, not only is the fat removed but also the number of fat cells is greatly reduced. In case of usual weight gain the fat will not be accumulated in the liposuctioned problem areas as before. As in adult persons no new fat cells grow the result is permament. In contrast to a diet, the fat storage capacity in the liposuctioned areas is thus significantly reduced. It should nonetheless be noted that in the rare case of very massive weight gain (e.g., 30 kilos plus) fat cells can be regenerated also in the liposuctioned areas. In these cases the aesthetic results of liposuction can be nullified.
How much does liposuction cost?
Several factors determine the fee, notably the size and number of the regions to be liposuctioned as well as the liposuction method chosen by you. During consultation with DDr. Heinrich a treatment plan with detailed costs is prepared. Fee of regular consultation which includes all necessary preliminary examination is € 100.00. Fee for VIP consultation is € 300.00.
Is liposuction painful?
Usually not, as the fat pads are infiltrated with an analgetic fluid. Complete absence of pain, however, cannot be guaranteed for any procedure performed under local anesthesia. Alternatively, you have the option of being put into intravenous sedation. However, we only recommend such sedation in exceptional cases, because it is normally necessary to perform liposuction with you completely mobile and conscious so you can stand up and move in order to achieve best possible aesthetic results.
How does liposculpture differ from other liposuction methods (e.g., ultrasound, laser)?
Not all liposuction is the same! There are many different methods. Liposculpture is particularly gentle to the tissue. In other methods mechanically enhanced suction devices destroy the fat cells prior to being suctioned. This is unnecessary as it does’t yield any conceivable advantage, puts additional stress on the tissue and prolongs the healing time. Other methods use aggressive ultrasound to destroy the fat cells before suctioning them. As the fat cells are removed anyway, destroying them beforehands is useless and can lead to further complications such as skin burning. Scar formation and asymmetries are potential consequences.
